A Couple of Chicks define “e-distribution” and the quick and dirty website development best practices

So we have many disciplines in developing a successful online presence.  There is Concept and Design, Programming,  Hosting, Copy writing, Search Engine Optimization/Search Engine Marketing and finally Web Analytics or the measurement of success.
So many people that I speak to tell me that they are almost overwhelmed with the amount of information there is to know about managing a successful website – and they all ask me if there is one guide or one set of rules to follow to build, and drive traffic to a successful website.
The answer is that there is no one simple answer – but proper planning, reliable suppliers and a good understanding of marketing principles is a great place to start!

The Chicks Best Practices Include:

  1. Build your website with a web developer that has been building and hosting successful websites for a few years and have maintained their client base.
  2. If it is a Marketing or Design agency that you are using, make sure that you are working with an agency that has a focus and experience in web marketing.
  3. Work with a search engine optimization (SEO) or search engine marketing (SEM) firm that can bridge the gap between the web developers and the designers.  This is a key step that is often missed.  You need to make sure that you can translate the creative and content of your website to the search engines – and this is an important step in your design and development stage at it will be critical to have the correct site architecture and content after the site is live and needs traffic.
  4. Remember to keep a consumer marketing focus before worrying about what the search engines want.  If you do this – applying SEO best practices will be easy.
  5. The next step is to focus on what I call “e-distribution”.

You have the website, the content and creative – and now you need to distribute the site all over the world wide web!  When I say e-Distribution, I define it as “Distribution of your website through the places in the online universe that your perspective clients may be including; the search engines, other relevant websites, Blogs, RSS Feeds, social communities, in articles relating to your product or service, in banner ads, in website listings, in relevant online directories – and the list goes on.  In short – if there is a place in the online space that relates to your website – you should be there!
This process does take time, patience, resources and commitment – but a well thought out plan of attack with a focus on the items above and you are off to a great start!
